7yo Vee & I read the Young Scientist magazine yesterday and it introduced magnets. I dug out our 2 Daiso magnets and a bunch of paper clips. Some simple activities:
- explore how like / unlike poles repel / attract
- see how many paper clips we could link
- try rubbing and magnetising paper clips
My mum was a seamstress and had a bulky magnet to hold her loose needles. I remember being fascinated and playing with them for hours.
My dad (ex-shipbuilder) also used to share stories about gigantic magnets that lifted heavy parts.
I was fortunate to learn about the real usefulness of magnets.
Time is limited (on weekdays), so we’d explore more again. Happy teaching & learning!
