Books – Early Chapter Books

As most of us already know, reading is a very important learning activity. One of my children is super active, can read individual long words, love learning yet is a reluctant reader when it comes to wordy books. Eventually, he started reading chapter books by himself. Our family loves these books:

Magic Tree House Boxed Set, Books 1-28

*

This is the #1 New York Times bestselling chapter book series by Mary Pope Osborne, which we love.  It’s about two children, Jack and Annie, who go on exciting adventures around the world in history. Through the stories, my children were exposed to a wide variety of topics, which they could delve deeper into using other resources.

Tip: Reluctant readers find it easier to understand books that are in a series because of the same main characters who are carried throughout the stories. For this reason, when my child is finally enjoying a book, I’d get the entire series.

This is the set I’ve been recommending friends who are looking for first chapter books for their emerging readers. Feedback has been extremely positive.

Magic Tree House Merlin Missions #1-25 Boxed Set

*
Magic Tree House Merlin Missions are more challenging adventures for the experienced Magic Tree House reader. In each adventure, Merlin the magician sends Jack and Annie on an adventure in the magic tree house.

My ex-reluctant reader was happy to read through one book every 1 to 2 afternoons and has been ultra-motivated to finish the entire set.

The Treehouse Books Collection

*

This is a totally different set of treehouse series, by Andy Griffiths. It all started with the 13-Story Treehouse full of hilarious illustrations and adventures that Andy and Terry go through.

My child loves it so much that we ended up buying the 26-Story, 39-Story, 52-Story, 78-Story and 91-Story books, and he is eagerly waiting for the next release. Although not much of in-depth plots, he picks up some vocabulary from these books and experiences the joy of independent reading.

Although words such as “stupid” and “idiot” occasionally appear in the books *gasp*, we agreed that as long as he doesn’t use these words in his regular conversations, he can read all of them.

Famous Five Series (21 Books Box Set)

*

Though Enid Blyton was one of my favourite childhood author, I didn’t read The Famous Five series. My reluctant reader who love adventure stories persuaded me to buy this set at a bookfair.

He started to read the first book but the font is a bit small, so he moved to the Magic Tree House books mentioned above and would come back to these books at a later stage.
